Perched high on the Capitoline Hill, the Roman mint wasn’t just any coin factory; it was nestled beside the revered temple of Juno Moneta. But why “Moneta”? There’s a legendary twist.
Back in 390 BC, as Gauls crept towards Rome under cover of darkness, Juno’s sacred geese made quite the racket. Their noisy honking roused the Roman defenders in the nick of time, saving the city from disaster. Since Juno had essentially ‘warned’ them (the Latin word monere means “to warn”), Romans dedicated a temple to her under the title Moneta.
And here’s the clever bit: the name stuck. Not just with the temple—but with money itself. Over time, Moneta evolved into the word we all chase today: money.
Caesar’s Coin: A Masterstroke of Morale
Fast forward to 46 BC. Julius Caesar, ever the showman and strategist, had just wrapped up his quadruple Triump, a victory parade four times over. To mark the occasion, and to keep his legions loyal (and jingly in the pocket), he authorised a massive minting of coins.
This very coin comes from that flood of currency, freshly struck and purposefully distributed to Caesar’s troops stationed in Rome. While the celebrations dazzled the crowds, these coins quietly reinforced Caesar’s power and generosity.
