Henry V: England’s Warrior King with a Crown and a Cause

A Prince Born for Battle

Henry V was born on 16 September 1386 (or 1387) in Monmouth Castle, Wales, to Henry Bolingbroke (later Henry IV) and Mary de Bohun. From the start, young Henry seemed destined for war rather than nursery rhymes. At just sixteen, he fought valiantly against the Welsh rebel Owain Glyndŵr, earning both scars and respect.

A Crown and a Calling

In 1413, following his father’s death, Henry V took the throne. Unlike his father—who seized the crown through rebellion—Henry was determined to prove himself a legitimate and glorious king. Almost immediately, he set his sights across the Channel, reigniting the Hundred Years’ War with France. Why settle for peace when you can have Paris?

Agincourt and Glory

Henry’s most famous achievement came in 1415 at the Battle of Agincourt. Outnumbered, exhausted, and knee-deep in mud, the English army—led by a steel-nerved Henry—crushed the French nobility. It wasn’t just a win; it was a military masterclass. Archers, tactics, and weather all played their part, but it was Henry’s sheer nerve and leadership that stole the show.

Following that triumph, Henry negotiated the Treaty of Troyes in 1420, marrying Catherine of Valois, daughter of the French king, and being recognised as heir to the French throne. He wasn’t just England’s king—he was now practically running France as well.

Legacy and a Baby King

Henry V died suddenly in 1422, likely of dysentery, while campaigning in France. He was only 35. England mourned a hero, while his infant son, Henry VI, inherited two crowns and absolutely none of his father’s charisma. Unfortunately, young Henry’s weak rule and frequent mental breakdowns would drag England back into civil war.

Final Thoughts on a Fierce King

Henry V left behind a legacy of military brilliance and national pride. Shakespeare later turned him into a legend with stirring speeches and a heroic halo. But behind the crown was a sharp mind, a cold strategist, and a king who understood one thing clearly—a strong sword often speaks louder than a shaky claim.
