43-35BC Sextus Pompey Silver Denarius – EF
A fantastic example of this military mint struck under Sextus Pompey. Boldly struck portrait of Pompey Magnus (Pompey the great) in high relief and a particularly expressive facial detail.
The reverse represents two Sicilian brothers, Amphinomus and Anapis whom it is believed that they saved their parents from the flames of the volcano Etna when it erupted and by doing so they lost their own lives. Both equally courageous in the performance of duty, this reverse is used on coins relating to Pompey in reference to his naval command in which Neptune forms the centre of a group, indicative to his victories over the pirates on the coasts of Sicily and Italy.
Striking portrait of Pompey, the obverse slightly off flan and with minor weakness on the reverse, else graded Extremely Fine and scarce as thus.
