Alexander III, later known as the Great, entered the world in 356 BCE in Pella, the capital of Macedon. His parents, King Philip II and Queen Olympias, provided both steel and fire. Philip forged a military machine; Olympias fuelled Alexander’s sense of destiny. From the outset, Aristotle educated the young prince, and as a result, Alexander learned philosophy, medicine, and a deep love of Homer. Initially, Alexander ascended the throne at just 20 years old after Philip’s assassination in 336 BCE. However, rivals doubted him. Therefore, he moved fast. Although he died young in 323 BCE, aged just 32, his influence endured.
