Vichy France in French Indochina, 1940–1945
France Under Vichy Rule
Following France’s defeat by Germany in 1940, the Vichy government continued to control French Indochina under the leadership of Governor-General Jean Decoux. Although Indochina remained formally French, Japanese forces entered the territory and gradually gained greater military control. Consequently, French authorities found themselves governing under heavy Japanese pressure.
War and Legacy
Meanwhile, Japanese forces used Indochina as a strategic base during the Second World War, particularly against Allied interests in China and Southeast Asia. French colonial officials continued administering much of the territory until March 1945, when Japan suddenly removed French authority and took direct control.
Ultimately, Vichy rule in Indochina demonstrated how quickly French colonial power could weaken during the war. Moreover, the experience encouraged Vietnamese nationalist movements, which later challenged both Japanese and French control. Thus, the war helped accelerate the end of French colonial rule in Indochina.
