Birth and Background
Sir Edmund Hillary was born on 20 July 1919 in Auckland, New Zealand. He grew up in a modest family, and from an early age he developed a love of the outdoors. As a schoolboy, he discovered mountaineering during a trip to Mount Ruapehu. Consequently, this experience shaped his ambitions and strengthened his determination.
