King George V and His Reign Over Australia (1910–1936)

Birth, Family and Rise to the Throne

George V was born on 3 June 1865 at Marlborough House in London. He belonged to the royal House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha and was the second son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Consequently, George did not originally expect to become king. However, after his elder brother, Albert Victor, died in 1892, George became heir to the throne. He succeeded his father in 1910 and reigned until his death in 1936.

George V and Australia

George held an important place in Australia’s early national history. Before becoming king, he visited Australia in 1901 as the Duke of Cornwall and York and officially opened the first Parliament of the new Commonwealth in Melbourne. Therefore, he held a direct connection with Australia from its earliest days as a federated nation.

Furthermore, as King of Australia, George reigned during a period of enormous change. Most notably, Australia entered the First World War in 1914 as part of the British Empire, and Australian soldiers served in campaigns including Gallipoli and the Western Front. Consequently, George became a powerful symbol of loyalty to the Empire for many Australians during the conflict.

Legacy

George V died on 20 January 1936, ending a reign of more than twenty-five years. His legacy in Australia remained closely connected with Federation, the First World War and Australia’s growing national identity. Moreover, his portrait appeared on Australian banknotes, while a memorial in Canberra honours his reign and Australia’s wartime contribution.

Ultimately, George ruled during a time when Australia began to develop a stronger identity of its own. He represented the British Empire, certainly, but Australia was slowly learning that it could stand on its own two feet—without asking London for permission every time.
