Discovery of Bass Strait

In 1798, navigator and explorer Matthew Flinders discovered the Bass Strait, which separates mainland Australia from Tasmania. Flinders, aboard the HMS Investigator, navigated the treacherous waters and proved the existence of a strait, rather than an isthmus. His findings were crucial for accurately mapping the region and contributed to the understanding of Australia's geography. The strait was named after Flinders' colleague, George Bass, recognizing their joint efforts in exploring and charting this significant maritime passage. This discovery facilitated safer navigation and increased maritime trade between the Australian mainland and Tasmania.

Matthew Flinders (1771-1812)

Matthew Flinders was a prominent British explorer and navigator who played a crucial role in mapping the continent during the early 19th century. Born 16 March 1774 in Donington, Lincolnshire, England.

George Bass (1771 – unknown c.1803)

George Bass was a British naval surgeon and explorer who played an important role in the early exploration of Australia. He was born on 30 January 1771 at Aswarby, Lincolnshire.

Joining the Navy

At the age of fifteen, he joined the Royal Navy. Initially assigned to HMS Alert as a servant under the patronage of Captain Thomas Pasley, Flinders was later transferred to HMS Scipio as an able seaman. In May 1791, at the recommendation of Pasley, Flinders became part of Captain William Bligh’s expedition on HMS Providence. The mission was to transport breadfruit from Tahiti to Jamaica. This voyage was the second of its kind for Bligh, after the ill-fated journey of HMS Bounty.

Discovery

Flinders achieved renown through his remarkable feat of circumnavigating Australia and meticulously charting its coastline. Consequently, his detailed work served as the bedrock for the country’s cartography. In 1801, at the helm of the HMS Investigator, he spearheaded the inaugural complete circumnavigation of Australia, definitively categorizing it as a distinct continent. Notably, Flinders’ legacy extends beyond exploration; he is credited with coining the term “Australia.” Despite grappling with adversities, such as imprisonment by the French, his invaluable contributions profoundly shaped Australia’s comprehension of its geography. Culminating in his death in 1814, Flinders left an indelible mark on exploration and navigation in the region.

Education

He attended Boston Grammar School and later trained in medicine at the hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire. At the age of 18, he was accepted in London as a member of the Company of Surgeons, and in 1794 he joined the Royal Navy as a surgeon. He arrived in Sydney in New South Wales on HMS Reliance on 7 September 1795.

Exploration & Adventure

Partnered with Matthew in 1797, they embarked on several journeys on an open boat called the “Tom Thumb I and II.” During this journey, they discovered and charted parts of the Australian coastline, proving that Tasmania was separated from the mainland. Bass also explored and documented the natural history of the regions he encountered. Sadly, his later life was marked by tragedy, and he disappeared at sea around 1803. To commemorate his exploration legacy, Bass Strait and Bass River in Australia were named after him.

This 1998 RAM Bass & Flinders 6-Coin Year Set is a fantastic historical tribute to commemorate the bicentenary of these two iconic figures in Australian history!
