Mithradates II: The Great King of Kings
Lineage and Rise
Mithradates II, who ruled 123–88 BC, stood among the most powerful rulers of the Arsacid dynasty. He likely followed Artabanus I, and therefore inherited both opportunity and crisis. Initially, Parthia faced threats from nomadic groups and rival kingdoms. However, Mithradates did not hesitate. Instead, he acted quickly, restored order, and expanded control. Consequently, his reign marked a high point in Parthian strength.
Reign and Achievements
Firstly, he defeated nomadic invaders from Central Asia, securing eastern borders. Moreover, he pushed westward and gained influence over Mesopotamia and Babylonia. Meanwhile, he intervened in Armenian affairs, shaping regional politics. Notably, he adopted the grand title “King of Kings,” signalling imperial ambition. Therefore, Parthia shifted from regional power to major empire. In addition, diplomatic contacts with Rome began during his reign, showing strategic awareness.
Legacy
Although later kings struggled, Mithradates left Parthia strong and respected. Thus, historians often call him one of its greatest rulers. In short, he did not simply wear the crown — he upgraded it.
