Sir Henry Parkes (1815-1896)

Sir Henry Parkes was an influential Australian statesman and one of the founding fathers of the nation. Originally from England, Parkes migrated to Australia in 1839 and quickly became involved in politics. He played a vital role in the federation movement, advocating for the unification of the six separate Australian colonies into a single nation.

Service in Office

Parkes served as Premier of New South Wales multiple times, totalling over 11 years in office. He was a strong proponent of education, social reform, and infrastructure development, earning him the moniker “the father of Australian federation.” His articulate speeches and persuasive abilities were instrumental in gaining support for federation among the various colonies.

Federation

Parkes’ tireless efforts culminated in the convening of the Australasian Federal Convention in 1891, where the draft of the Australian Constitution was debated and agreed upon. Although he did not live to see the federation officially come into being in 1901, his vision and determination were critical in laying the groundwork for the modern nation of Australia.

Legacy

Today, Sir Henry Parkes’ legacy is still present today through numerous parks, buildings, and institutions named in his honour. He is remembered as a key figure in the early history of Australia and the architect of its path to nationhood.

This 1996 year set from the RAM is yet another fitting tribute to the work of this great Australian political figure.
