Faustina the Elder: Rome’s Most Respected Empress

Her father, Marcus Annius Verus, served as a respected consul, while her mother, Rupilia Faustina, descended from imperial blood. Consequently, Faustina grew up surrounded by influence, education, and expectation. Moreover, Roman society prepared her not merely for comfort, but for significance. Even so, she would eventually exceed every assumption placed upon her.

Marriage to Antoninus Pius

However, pedigree alone never secured lasting fame. Instead, Faustina’s marriage shaped her destiny. Around AD 110–115, she married Antoninus Pius, a calm, capable senator who valued stability over spectacle. At the time, he held no throne; nevertheless, his steady rise mirrored Faustina’s quiet strength. Together, they formed a partnership rooted in loyalty rather than drama. Furthermore, Faustina bore several children, including Faustina the Younger, who would later marry Marcus Aurelius—because Rome clearly loved keeping power in the family.

Meanwhile, Faustina earned a reputation for dignity, generosity, and public virtue. Therefore, when Antoninus ascended as emperor in AD 138, Rome embraced Faustina as empress without hesitation. Indeed, she embodied the moral ideal Rome wished to project.

Life as Empress

Death and Divine Honours

Sadly, Faustina’s story ended in AD 140, only two years into her time as empress. Antoninus mourned deeply; notably, he honoured her with deification. Thus, Rome worshipped her as Diva Faustina, and artists immortalised her serene features on coins and statues across the empire.

Ultimately, Faustina the Elder proved that influence need not shout. Instead, through grace, constancy, and impeccable timing, she shaped Rome’s golden calm—without ever lifting a sword.
