An extremely rare Victorian combined gilt brass Letter Scale and Stamp Case, opening to the reverse to be able to place a single postage stamp compartment. A sprung clip for attaching to a letter and suspension ring to the top. The front has a scale in both weights and rates in ounces and pence.
By James Allen Birmingham, c1888. Stamped with registered design no: 102604. Allen manufactured a small number of these in solid silver and brass, all with registered design numbers (all registered in 1888). A number have been offered in the last few years, a similar brass design sold for £200! The silver fetch three times the price.
