Amphipolis: Macedonia’s Glittering Gate

Perched near the mouth of the Strymon River in eastern Macedonia, Amphipolis didn’t just sit pretty—it mattered. Located along key trade and military routes between Thrace and the Aegean, the city offered both wealth and strategic muscle. Naturally, the Athenians wanted in.

Athens Wants Amphipolis

In 437 BCE, Athens founded Amphipolis not for the view, but for the timber, gold, and silver lurking nearby. Moreover, the location gave them access to Thracian resources and blocked rival routes. They tried holding onto it, but not very well. The Spartan general Brasidas swiped it in 424 BCE, despite heroic efforts by the Athenian Cleon. Spoiler: both men died in the counterattack.

A City of Macedonians and More

While originally peopled by colonists, Amphipolis eventually blended Macedonian identity with Greek flair. Later, it became a favourite of Alexander the Great, who launched his Asian campaigns from there. Even after the Romans arrived, Amphipolis clung to its status as a local star.

So, while it rarely makes tourist posters today, in its prime, Amphipolis was a city worth fighting over and dying for.
