Japan’s Tenpō era marched in with problems and a reformer’s sigh. Crop failures bit hard; consequently, famine spread and tempers flared. Meanwhile, officials launched the Tenpō Reforms to restore order, frugality, and good Confucian manners. They cracked down on luxury, trimmed spending, and tried to steer society back to “simpler” ways. However, people still loved fashion, theatre, and city life; therefore, many rules met eye-rolls rather than applause.

Enter the Shu Ban Kin, a neat, rectangular gold coin that packed value into a compact slab. Merchants liked its convenience; moreover, authorities used it to stabilise currency during choppy economic waters. Nevertheless, repeated debasements and adjustments muddied trust in money. Consequently, prices wobbled, and commoners felt the squeeze. Still, these coins show how the shogunate fought financial headaches with practical tools — less poetic than samurai swords, perhaps, yet far more useful at the rice market.
