Titus (79–81 AD): The Reluctant Hero Who Ruled with Heart and Haste

Born for the Purple

Titus was born on 30 December 39 AD in Rome, the eldest son of Vespasian and Domitilla the Elder. From the beginning, he was groomed for power. With his father rising through military ranks, Titus received a top-tier education and military experience to match. Yet, unlike some sons of emperors, he didn’t stumble into power—he earned it.

The Path to Power

Titus first gained public recognition as a military commander during the Jewish War. Notably, he led the brutal siege and destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD —a campaign that crushed the rebellion and made him both feared and famous. Consequently, his father rewarded him with increasingly high-profile roles, including head of the Praetorian Guard. When Vespasian died in 79 AD, Titus was ready. He succeeded him without opposition, becoming the first Roman emperor to follow his own father.

A Short Reign, A Long Impact

Although Titus ruled for only two years, his time in power was eventful. First, Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD, burying Pompeii and Herculaneum under ash. Then, in 80 AD, a devastating fire ravaged Rome for three days. Through it all, Titus responded quickly, funding relief efforts and compensating victims. As a result, he gained immense popularity—a rare feat for any Roman emperor.

Moreover, he completed the grand Colosseum, opening it with 100 days of games that included gladiator fights, wild animal hunts, and even mock sea battles. Titus may not have been a natural showman like Nero, but he certainly knew how to win public favour.

A Death Too Soon

Tragically, Titus died in 81 AD, only two years into his reign. Some suspected poison—possibly at the hands of his younger brother, Domitian—but no proof ever emerged. His death was mourned across the empire, and even historians like Suetonius praised him as “the darling of the human race.”

Legacy Carved in Stone

Though brief, Titus’s reign left a lasting mark. He proved that even an emperor who wielded the sword could rule with compassion. Today, his name endures—etched into the Arch of Titus and remembered as a man who faced disaster with dignity
