Emperor Otho of Rome (AD 69)

Bloodline and Rise to Power

Marcus Salvius Otho was born on 28 April AD 32 at Ferentium in central Italy. He came from a wealthy and influential Roman family, giving him the social connections needed to enter imperial politics. His father, Lucius Otho, served as a senator and held important government positions, while his mother, Albia Terentia, also came from a respected Roman family.

Furthermore, Otho became closely connected with the future Emperor Nero and initially enjoyed a privileged position at court. However, their friendship eventually collapsed after Nero sent Otho away to govern Lusitania. Consequently, Otho developed political ambitions of his own.

The Year of the Four Emperors

In AD 68, Nero’s rule collapsed after revolts spread across the empire, and Galba became emperor. However, Galba quickly lost support, particularly among the Praetorian Guard. Otho therefore saw his opportunity.

On 15 January AD 69, Otho’s supporters murdered Galba in the Roman Forum. Consequently, Otho seized the imperial throne. His victory, however, proved rather less permanent than he might have hoped.

Meanwhile, the legions in Germania had proclaimed Vitellius emperor. Therefore, Rome soon faced another civil war. Although Otho attempted to negotiate, Vitellius’ forces marched into Italy, leading to the First Battle of Bedriacum in April AD 69.

Death and Legacy

After suffering defeat, Otho chose not to continue the conflict. Instead, he committed suicide on 16 April AD 69, reportedly to prevent further Roman bloodshed. He had ruled for only around three months.

Nevertheless, Otho left a surprisingly respectable legacy considering the brevity of his reign. Ancient writers often portrayed him as vain and pleasure-loving, yet his final decision showed courage and a willingness to sacrifice himself for stability.

Ultimately, Otho became one of the shortest-lived Roman emperors. His reign demonstrated just how quickly power could change hands during Rome’s Year of the Four Emperors. In AD 69, being emperor was apparently less a permanent job and more an extremely dangerous temporary position.
