An outstanding Vespasian Gold Aureus struck in 75 AD Rome
Depicting Pax enthroned on ornate chair left facing, extending olive branch downward in right hand, transverse long sceptre in left hand, with ‘PAX AUGVST’ around.
This coin may have been struck to appeal to Pax for peace as the First Jewish Revolt neared its end. On April 14, 70 A.D., Titus surrounded Jerusalem. He permitted pilgrims to enter for Passover, creating a trap that strained food and water supplies. The assault on the walls began on May 10. The third wall fell on May 25, the second on May 30. On July 20, Titus stormed the Temple Mount, and on August 4, 70 A.D., he destroyed the Temple. The Jewish fast of Tisha B’Av mourns the Fall of Jerusalem annually on this date.
