Flavius Valentinianus (364-375)

Valentinian I, also known as ‘Valentinian the Great’, was the first Roman emperor from the Valentinianic dynasty. He ruled the western half of the empire from 364 to 375 AD, while his brother Valens governed the East.

Valentinian was a highly skilled military leader and administrator. He was born in Cibalae, Pannonia (now modern-day Vinkovci, Croatia) and climbed the ranks of the army before being proclaimed emperor by his troops.

During his reign, Valentinian faced various challenges, including border conflicts and internal strife. He was a strong advocate of Christianity and aimed to improve the Roman state by introducing reforms and fortifications. Sadly, he died in 375 AD due to a fatal stroke he suffered while shouting at some members of the Quadi tribe over a dispute. This quarrel was about an agreement to supply fresh recruits to the Roman army in exchange for receiving deputation from the Quadi tribes and being allowed to leave in peace.
