Early Life and Background

Born around 382 BCE in central Macedonia, Antigonos I Monophthalmos—whose rather dramatic nickname means “The One-Eyed”—was destined to leave a mark on history. His exact birthplace remains debated, but most sources place it in Elimeia, a region known for producing tough, no-nonsense warriors. His father, Philip, wasn’t a king or even a noble of high rank, but a solid Macedonian of enough means to raise a future general.

Antigonos didn’t come from royalty, yet he climbed fast through the ranks thanks to grit, skill, and perfect timing. By the time Alexander the Great launched his grand conquest of Persia, Antigonos was already a trusted commander. He wasn’t just another spear-waver; he played a key role in campaigns across Asia Minor and beyond.

The Fight for Power After Alexander

When Alexander died suddenly in 323 BCE, without naming a clear successor, chaos took centre stage. The vast empire—from Greece to India—couldn’t govern itself. So, his generals, the Diadochi (Greek for “successors”), carved it up like a giant, disputed pie.

Antigonos initially received Phrygia, Pamphylia, and Lycia—choice territories in Asia Minor. However, he had bigger ambitions and no interest in playing second fiddle. Through cunning alliances, swift action, and some good old-fashioned battlefield muscle, he expanded his power rapidly.

Rise to Rule and Bold Ambitions

By 306 BCE, after defeating rival fleets and marching across lands like he owned the place (which, increasingly, he did), Antigonos declared himself king. Not just any king—King of Asia. His son, Demetrios, shared the title. This bold move inspired the other Diadochi to do the same. The idea of one unified empire? Dead in the water.

The empire fractured permanently. Ptolemy grabbed Egypt, Seleukos claimed Mesopotamia, Lysimachos held Thrace, and Cassander took Macedonia. Antigonos, meanwhile, aimed for the whole pie—but ended up with the knife. At the Battle of Ipsos in 301 BCE, a coalition of rivals defeated and killed him.

Legacy of the One-Eyed Warrior

Though he died in battle, Antigonos’s legacy endured. His descendants ruled parts of the former empire for generations, founding the Antigonid dynasty in Macedonia. One eye down, but never short of vision, Antigonos remains a towering figure in the blood-soaked chessboard of Alexander’s shattered world.
