Alexander III, later known as the Great, entered the world in 356 BCE in Pella, the capital of Macedon. His parents, King Philip II and Queen Olympias, provided both steel and fire. Philip forged a military machine; Olympias fuelled Alexander’s sense of destiny. From the outset, Aristotle educated the young prince, and as a result, Alexander learned philosophy, medicine, and a deep love of Homer.
