Carinus: The Scandalous Emperor (283–285 AD)
Birth and Family
Marcus Aurelius Carinus was born around 250 AD, likely in Narbo, Gaul. As the eldest son of Emperor Carus, he received a military-focused education, while his younger brother, Numerian, pursued a more scholarly path. From an early age, Carinus stood in line for power, though his rule would become infamous for indulgence rather than leadership.
Rise to Power
In 283 AD, Carus led a military campaign against the Persians, leaving Carinus to govern the western empire. Soon after, news arrived that Carus had died—some claimed lightning struck him. Carinus seized the throne without hesitation, swiftly securing his position by rewarding allies and eliminating rivals. Yet, his excessive lifestyle and scandalous behaviour quickly damaged his reputation.
Achievements and Rule
Although ancient historians condemned him, Carinus achieved notable military victories. He successfully defended the empire’s borders, defeating Germanic invaders along the Rhine and Danube. Additionally, he staged a lavish spectacle in Rome, demonstrating his wealth and power. However, his excesses overshadowed his successes. Many accused him of corruption, cruelty, and reckless affairs, which further alienated his subjects.
The Fall of Carinus
By 285 AD, discontent had spread across the empire, and Diocletian emerged as a formidable challenger. Their forces met at the Battle of the Margus River. Although Carinus commanded a strong army, betrayal sealed his fate. At the height of battle, one of his officers—allegedly angered over a personal scandal—turned against him. Assassins struck him down, allowing Diocletian to take control and reshape Rome’s future.
Legacy
Carinus remains more famous for debauchery than leadership. Ancient sources paint him as a tyrant, though later historians suspect Diocletian’s supporters exaggerated his flaws. Nevertheless, his short reign serves as a cautionary tale of excess, arrogance, and the dangers of making the wrong enemies.
