Emperor Numerian: The Tragic Poet-Emperor

Marcus Aurelius Numerianus, better known as Numerian, ruled as Roman emperor from 283 to 284 AD. Born around 253 AD, he was the younger son of Emperor Carus and the brother of Carinus. While historians remain uncertain about his exact birthplace, he likely came from the Balkans or Gaul, where his father held strong military influence. Unlike many emperors who thrived in battle, Numerian stood out for his intellect, poetic talent, and philosophical nature.

Rise to Power and Co-Rule

In 283 AD, Carus ascended to the throne and immediately elevated Numerian to co-emperor while assigning Carinus to govern the Western Roman Empire. Determined to expand Rome’s power, Carus led a military campaign against the Sassanid Empire in Persia, with Numerian at his side. However, during the campaign, Carus died under mysterious circumstances. Some claimed lightning struck him, while others suspected assassination. In the wake of his father’s sudden death, Numerian assumed command of the Eastern Roman forces and began leading the army back toward Rome.

A Mysterious and Tragic Death

Initially, Numerian showed promise as a leader, but his health soon deteriorated. Reports suggest he developed a severe eye infection, making him sensitive to daylight. As a result, he traveled in a closed litter while the army continued its march. Weeks passed, and his soldiers believed he was merely resting. However, as a foul stench seeped from the litter, they grew suspicious. When they finally opened it, they discovered his decaying corpse—dead for days.

Legacy and Aftermath

The shocking discovery sparked immediate political chaos. Many suspected his ambitious father-in-law, Aper, of orchestrating the murder to seize power. However, before Aper could act, the general Diocletian boldly accused him of treachery and executed him on the spot. With Aper eliminated, Diocletian claimed the throne, ushering in a new era for Rome. Although Numerian’s reign was brief, his tragic end left a lasting mark on Roman history. Despite his short rule, he is remembered as a poet-emperor, an intellectual ruler caught in the deadly power struggles of the empire.
