Tetradrachm of Volusian struck in Antioch, Syria
Volusian rose to power in 251 AD as co-emperor alongside his father, Trebonianus Gallus, during a time of crisis for the Roman Empire. His reign was short-lived, as a rebellious general, Aemilian, gained support, leading to Volusian’s betrayal and assassination by his own troops in 253 AD.

Emperor Volusian: A Brief and Turbulent Reign
Early Life and Rise to Power
Born around 230 AD, Gaius Vibius Afinius Gallus Veldumnianus Volusian was the son of Emperor Trebonianus Gallus. His father seized the throne in 251 AD after Emperor Decius died in battle. Shortly after, Volusian gained the title of co-emperor, ruling alongside his father.
Challenges and Conflicts
During his reign, the empire faced constant threats. A devastating plague weakened Rome, while Persian king Shapur I launched invasions in the East. Meanwhile, unrest spread as Aemilian, a rebellious general, gained support and marched against the emperors.
Downfall and Death
As Aemilian’s forces approached, Volusian and his father fled. However, their own troops, fearing defeat, betrayed and assassinated them in 253 AD. With their deaths, Aemilian briefly claimed the throne, marking another period of instability for the Roman Empire.
