Princess Alexandra’s Own 19th Hussars: From Horseback to History

Formed for a Fight

In 1858, the British Army raised the 19th Hussars during the Indian Rebellion, responding swiftly to growing unrest. Just four years later, the regiment earned royal recognition, taking the name Princess Alexandra’s Own. From the outset, it combined speed, skill, and style—classic cavalry with a royal twist.

Battles, Bravery, and Bold Moves

Over the decades, the 19th Hussars galloped into action across several major campaigns. In 1882, they fought in Egypt at Tel el-Kebir. Sixteen years later, they charged again at Omdurman. Moreover, during the Boer War, they held their own in South Africa’s brutal terrain. Although cavalry tactics faded in the First World War, the regiment adapted quickly. Rather than fade into history, they traded sabres for shovels and pushed through the mud and gunfire of the Western Front.

A Proud Legacy

Eventually, in 1922, the regiment merged with the 15th Hussars. However, their legacy endures through regimental museums, battle honours, and a place in Britain’s military story. After all, while horses no longer lead the charge, the spirit of the 19th Hussars still rides on.
