Volunteer Air Observers Corps (VAOC): Australia’s Eyes on the Skies

Born from Necessity

As WWII intensified, the threat of enemy aircraft loomed. In response, Australia formed the Volunteer Air Observers Corps (VAOC) in 1941. With the RAAF stretched thin, the government turned to everyday civilians to help defend the homeland.

Who Could Join?

Anyone with sharp eyes and sharper ears. Men and women from all walks of life signed up—teachers, farmers, shopkeepers—many with zero military experience but plenty of patriotism.

Why It Mattered

Observers tracked aircraft from thousands of posts, often in remote or coastal areas. Their quick reporting helped protect cities, factories and ports. In short, they were Australia’s unofficial air force on the home front—watchful, reliable and ready.
