King George VI (1937-1952)

A Reluctant Royal

George VI arrived on 14 December 1895 at Sandringham House, Norfolk. At birth, his family knew him as Prince Albert, though relatives often called him “Bertie”. Unlike many confident heirs, he grew up shy and thoughtful. Nevertheless, his steady character later proved invaluable. He belonged to the House of Windsor, the royal family name adopted during the First World War to replace the more German-sounding Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

His father, King George V, ruled Britain with strict discipline and strong expectations. Meanwhile, his mother, Queen Mary, valued duty, tradition, and impeccable manners. Consequently, young Albert grew up in a household that prized responsibility over comfort. Meanwhile, the king overcame a lifelong speech impediment and delivered powerful radio broadcasts that encouraged the British public.
