The 1937 Australian Crown: A Bold Coin with a Short Life

In 1937, Australia released its first and only circulating silver crown to mark the coronation of King George VI. At the time, the Royal Mint aimed to produce a grand coin reflecting the significance of the new monarch’s reign. Weighing a hefty 28.28 grams and measuring over 38 millimetres across, the crown stood out immediately.

Designed to Impress

Unlike smaller denominations, the crown featured a detailed design by George Kruger Gray. The reverse showed a royal crown surrounded by stylised national symbols. Although it impressed collectors, the coin proved too large and heavy for everyday use.

Public Response and Decline

Initially, the public welcomed the novelty. However, many soon found it impractical. Because of its size, it did not fit neatly in wallets or coin purses. Furthermore, few people saw the need for a coin worth five shillings. As a result, demand quickly faded.

A Collector’s Curiosity

Although the crown never gained popularity in circulation, it became a desirable collector’s item. Today, it serves as a reminder of an ambitious but short-lived experiment in Australian currency history.
