The Standing Liberty Quarter: A Coin with a Bold Stance
A New Face for a New Century
In 1916, the United States decided its coins needed a makeover. Out went the old Barber designs, and in came something fresher—enter the Standing Liberty Quarter. Sculpted by Hermon Atkins MacNeil, this striking coin didn’t just sit quietly in your pocket; it stood proud, literally.
Liberty, Shield in Hand, Sandals Optional
On the obverse, Lady Liberty appears mid-stride, as if stepping out to defend democracy or perhaps just crossing the street stylishly. Draped in a flowing gown, she holds a shield in one hand and an olive branch in the other—clearly ready for both war and peace. The original version even had her breast bared, which caused quite the stir. By 1917, modesty won out, and the design received a subtle bit of armour.
An Eagle Takes Flight
Meanwhile, the reverse side features an eagle soaring across the sky, flanked by stars. It’s elegant, simple, and unusually dynamic for the era. Compared to the static designs of earlier coins, this one felt like it moved—and people noticed.
A Brief But Brilliant Run
Although the Standing Liberty Quarter only circulated until 1930, it left a lasting impression. It was bold, beautiful, and just a bit cheeky. Today, collectors still chase it for its artistry—and perhaps, secretly, for that daring little glimpse of Liberty’s rebellious side.
