1000 Years of Althing
The modern parliament in Iceland is called the Althing, sharing its name with the assembly established in 930 CE that governed Iceland during the Viking Age. While the Althing is considered the oldest national government assembly in Europe, it has undergone many changes over the past 1000 years. The Viking-era Althing had some features of a modern parliament, but it was quite different in many ways
Reason behind Striking
This coin is part of a series of three issued in 1930. In Iceland, they are considered “semi-official.” The issuance was not requested by the government but was a decision made by an official parliamentary committee. For this reason, these three coins are classified under Iceland rather than in the Exonumia section. Historically, among the 2, 5, and 10 Krónur coins, only the 2 Krónur occasionally served as a means of payment.
