Edward VIII became king in January 1936 after the death of his father, King George V. Known for his charm and modern outlook, Edward immediately captured public interest. Therefore, Edward’s proposed marriage clashed directly with royal and religious expectations.

The Abdication Shocks a Nation

Despite warnings and mounting pressure from government officials, Edward refused to give up Wallis. Consequently, in December 1936, he abdicated the throne, becoming the first English monarch to do so voluntarily. His brother, Albert, took the throne as King George VI, while Edward became the Duke of Windsor.
