Munitions Workers of WWI in Great Britain
When the First World War broke out, Britain faced a massive shortage—not of soldiers, but of shells. Almost overnight, the nation’s factories had to shift from producing pots and pans to churning out bombs and bullets. Consequently, women stepped into roles traditionally held by men. They didn’t hesitate. In fact, over a million women rolled up their sleeves and got to work in the munitions industry. They quickly became known as “munitionettes,” and their contribution changed the course of the war.
From Aprons to Ammunition
Women didn’t just take over office jobs—they operated lathes, mixed dangerous chemicals, and packed explosives. Many even handled TNT daily, which turned their skin yellow. Unsurprisingly, this earned them the nickname “Canary Girls.” Nevertheless, they pressed on. Moreover, their efforts kept the British Army supplied during some of its darkest hours. Without their relentless work, the guns might well have fallen silent.
The Badge of Duty
Interestingly, the government didn’t overlook these efforts. To show appreciation, it issued the On War Service badge to workers in vital industries. This small brass badge wasn’t just a pin—it was a statement. It told the world, “I’m serving too.” Many wore it proudly, knowing that while they weren’t on the front lines, their work was just as crucial to victory.
Altogether, these women redefined what it meant to serve—and they did it with grit, grease, and a badge to prove it.
