Arthur Yates: The Man Who Made Gardening Grow
From Manchester to the Antipodes
Born in Lancashire on 10 May 1861, Arthur Yates grew up surrounded by seeds. His father, Samuel Yates, ran a thriving seed shop, which Arthur absorbed from a young age. However, asthma pushed Arthur to seek healthier air, so in 1879, he moved to New Zealand and worked as a farmhand near Otago.
Seeding a Business
By 1883, he opened a small seed shop in Auckland. Riding horseback, he sold seeds directly to farmers. A few years later, he relocated to Sydney, leaving the New Zealand branch to his brother Ernest. In 1888, he married Caroline Davies in England and returned to Australia with even bigger plans.
Growth, Books, and Business Blooms
Arthur published Yates’ Gardening Guide in 1895. It quickly became a gardening staple, updated yearly. Meanwhile, his business flourished. He opened a major warehouse in Sydney, travelled to Europe for the best seeds, and even started Australian seed farms. By 1907, he and Ernest separated their businesses but kept close ties.
Legacy in Full Bloom
After Caroline’s death in 1918, Arthur focused on philanthropy. He passed away in 1926, but his legacy thrived. His son Harold led the company, which later evolved into Yates Seeds Limited. Eventually, it became part of Orica in 2003—proof that from small seeds, mighty empires grow.
