1914-1918 WWI R.A.N Australian Returned from Active Service Sailors Badge., also known as Discharged From Active Service, issued to sailors who had seen active service afloat.
Struck in brass, with the reverse impressed with the service number 3263. Manufactured by Stokes & Sons of Melbourne. Graded as Very Fine; the patina is somewhat uneven. A scarcer issue, later replaced by the more common type. Modern replicas are frequently seen online.

The Return for Active Service Badge
A Badge for Those Who Came Back
While medals marked gallantry, the Return for Active Service Badge (RASB) marked something simpler—but no less significant: survival. Issued to Australian personnel who had served overseas during wartime, the badge gave returning veterans something tangible to wear back home. After all, not every hero marched in uniform.
Small Badge, Big Meaning
Shaped like a button and usually worn on civilian clothing, the badge showed that the wearer had done their bit. It prevented awkward questions like, “Why aren’t you at the front?”—especially helpful when dodging nosy neighbours. Later versions included service numbers on the back, making each badge uniquely personal.
