AIF Australian Relatives Enamel Badge, 1914–1918
A Badge of Family and Service
The Australian Female Relatives’ Badge was issued during the First World War to women whose husbands, sons or close male relatives served overseas with Australian forces. The badge featured a blue enamel oval surrounding the letters “AIF”, together with the words “Issued by Dept of Defence to Women of Australia” and “For Duty Done”. A King’s Crown completed the design.
Meaning and Legacy
Furthermore, additional bars could hang beneath the badge, with each bar representing another son or daughter serving overseas. Consequently, the badge became a very personal symbol of family sacrifice and wartime pride. Some women wore several bars, reflecting just how deeply the war affected Australian families.
Ultimately, this small enamel badge tells a much larger story. It recognised the relatives who remained at home while their loved ones served abroad—proof that, during the Great War, military service did not stop at the edge of the battlefield.
