The Australian Military’s Rising Sun Badge
A Design Born from Necessity
Back in 1902, as Australian troops prepared for the Boer War, Major General Sir Edward Hutton faced a dilemma—his soldiers needed a unique badge. Rather than settle for something dull, he drew inspiration from a “trophy of arms” gifted by a South Australian. As a result, a bold design emerged: a semicircle of bayonets and swords radiating like the rising sun. It looked fierce—and it stuck.
More Than Just a Hat Decoration
Over time, the Rising Sun found its place on slouch hats, service uniforms, and ceremonial dress. It didn’t just sit there looking pretty. Soldiers wore it with pride, often polishing it before parades—or before sneaking off to impress someone in town. Because of its placement over the left side, it came to represent loyalty, mateship, and a beating Australian heart.
A Lasting Legacy with Real Meaning
Today, the Rising Sun badge continues to carry deep symbolic weight. Whether displayed in museums, passed down through families, or worn on Remembrance Day, it remains a powerful reminder of the ANZAC spirit. Even though the design has evolved several times, the core message remains unchanged.
