Formed to Keep Things Moving
The British Army formed the Army Service Corps (ASC) in 1888 to tackle a problem as old as warfare itself—logistics. Soldiers could march and fight, certainly, but without supplies, they wouldn’t get far. The ASC stepped in to feed, fuel, and equip the entire army, ensuring it didn’t grind to a halt before the battle even began.
Victory Through Logistics
Although the corps rarely grabbed headlines, it played a pivotal role in both the Boer War and the First World War. It transported everything from ammunition and food to horses and hay. Moreover, during the Great War, the ASC managed the Herculean task of supplying millions of troops across Europe’s muddy, shell-ridden terrain—often under fire.
Legacy with Wheels and Honour
In 1918, the corps gained the “Royal” prefix in recognition of its service, becoming the Royal Army Service Corps. Eventually, it merged into the Royal Logistic Corps in 1993. Nevertheless, its legacy lives on: modern armies still run on the same simple truth—the best-fed soldier fights the hardes
