Edward VII: The Playboy Prince Turned Peacemaker King
Born at Buckingham Palace in 1841, Edward VII entered the world as Albert Edward, son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. From the start, he faced one daunting job: waiting. His mother reigned for over 63 years, so Edward spent most of his life warming the bench with style—travelling, gambling, and charming Europe’s elite.
From Heir to Emperor
At last, in 1901, Edward ascended the throne at the ripe age of 59. Though some doubted him, he surprised many by stepping up. He modernised the monarchy’s image and fostered diplomacy, earning the nickname Peacemaker for helping ease tensions across Europe—though the peace sadly didn’t last.
A Legacy Beyond Tailoring
While Edward didn’t draft laws or fight wars, he reshaped royal duties. He popularised public appearances, supported military reforms, and cultivated international alliances. Notably, he also revolutionised men’s fashion; without him, gentlemen might still suffocate in cravats.
He died in 1910, leaving behind a more visible, personable monarchy—plus a moustache style that’s still hard to beat!
