First year of issue, with the new obverse portrait of King Edward VII designed by G.W. De Saulles
The first year of the Edwardian Pennies; the reverses were struck using two different dies, one being the same as that used on Queen Victoria’s pennies from 1895 when the seated Britannia design of W.C. Lyon was modified removing the lighthouse and ship. The Victorian reverse dies are known as the “Normal or High Tide” dies, while the new dies from 1902 onward are the “Low Tide” dies. They can also be referred to as “High Sea Level” and “Low Sea Level” reverse dies.
