Obverse:The obverse depicts a left-facing bust of Liberty wearing a Phrygian, or Freedom, Cap, a symbol associated with the American Revolutionary War. Her hair falls in controlled curls, with slight drapery visible at the neckline. Thirteen stars, arranged with seven before and six behind, represent the original states of the Union. The headband is inscribed LIBERTY, with the date positioned below the portrait.
Reverse:The reverse shows an American bald eagle displayed with outstretched wings, grasping a bundle of arrows and an olive branch in its talons. Above the eagle, a scroll bears the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, while the name of the country encircles much of the design. The denomination, expressed as 50 C., appears beneath the eagle.
