$250.00

Issued in 1819 during the reign of João VI t of Portugal, this Silver 400 Réis is graded Extremley Fine and boasts exceptional detail throughout its historic design. An attractive piece with ‘old world ‘cabinet patina.

In 1688, the value of gold and silver increased by approximately 20%. As there was insufficient time to recall and recoin the circulating currency, the Law of 4 August 1688 raised the legal value of existing gold and silver coins by the same 20%. Despite this adjustment, the coinage itself remained unchanged for nearly 150 years, resulting in circulating coins carrying a value approximately 20% higher than their original face value.

João VI of Portugal

Early Life and Royal Lineage

João Maria José Francisco Xavier de Paula Luís António Domingos Rafael entered the world on 13 May 1767 at the Royal Palace of Queluz near Lisbon. He belonged to the House of Braganza, the dynasty that steered Portugal through wars, discoveries and more family intrigue than a modern television drama.

His father, King Pedro III, brought stability and restraint to court life, while his mother, Queen Maria I, ruled Portugal in her own right and earned a reputation for deep religious conviction and determined leadership. As the couple’s second son, João did not expect the crown to land on his head.

From Prince Regent to King

However, history had other plans. After the death of his elder brother José in 1788 and the decline of Queen Maria’s health, João assumed the role of Prince Regent in 1799. Consequently, he carried the burden of government long before he wore the crown.

Moreover, when Napoleon advanced across Europe, João made a bold and highly unusual decision. In 1807 he transferred the Portuguese court to Brazil, thereby preserving both the monarchy and Portugal’s independence. Few kings can claim they moved an empire across an ocean and kept it intact.

Achievements and Legacy

João formally became King João VI in 1816. Thereafter, he strengthened Brazil’s status within the empire and encouraged commerce, education and administration across the Atlantic world.

Ultimately, his reign bridged two continents and two eras. Although critics questioned his caution, history often rewards the ruler who survives the storm rather than the one who charges into it.
