A handsome survivor from the twilight of Portugal’s Regency era, this 1816 João Prince Regent Silver 400 Réis.
Graded good Extremley Fine and boasts exceptional detail throughout its historic design. A lustrous example with impressive eye appeal, it offers collectors a rare opportunity to own a beautifully preserved piece of early 19th-century Portuguese silver coinage.
In 1688, the value of gold and silver increased by approximately 20%. As there was insufficient time to recall and recoin the circulating currency, the Law of 4 August 1688 raised the legal value of existing gold and silver coins by the same 20%. Despite this adjustment, the coinage itself remained unchanged for nearly 150 years, resulting in circulating coins carrying a value approximately 20% higher than their original face value.

Early Life and Family Line
João, later King João VI of Portugal, entered the world on 13 May 1767 in the Ribeira Palace in Lisbon. He belonged to the House of Braganza, a royal dynasty that had guided Portugal since 1640 and rarely lacked confidence in its own importance. His father, King Pedro III, supported the Portuguese crown, while his mother, Queen Maria I, ruled Portugal in her own right and earned both admiration and concern during her troubled later years.
Furthermore, João grew up surrounded by court politics, royal expectations and enough etiquette rules to make modern office policies seem refreshingly brief.
Becoming Prince Regent
In 1799, João assumed the role of Prince Regent after his mother’s declining mental health prevented her from governing effectively. Consequently, he carried the burden of leadership during one of Europe’s most turbulent periods.
Achievements and Legacy
Most notably, João made the bold decision to move the Portuguese court to Brazil in 1807 as Napoleon’s forces approached Lisbon. Although critics questioned the move, the decision preserved Portuguese independence and protected the monarchy from French control.
Moreover, João opened Brazilian ports to international trade and encouraged economic development throughout the empire. As a result, Brazil grew in political importance and confidence.
Ultimately, João left a mixed but fascinating legacy. He may not have sought adventure, yet history rather rudely delivered it to his doorstep.
