King George III (1760–1820): A Stubborn King in Changing Times

Birth and Parentage

George III was born on 4 June 1738 at Norfolk House. He was the eldest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha. Therefore, although George ruled Britain, his family belonged to the German royal line of the House of Hanover. Unlike his two Hanoverian predecessors, however, George grew up in Britain and proudly described himself as “born and bred a Briton”.

Marriage and Family Life

In 1761, George married Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. Their marriage proved remarkably steady by royal standards. Moreover, the couple raised a famously large family of fifteen children. Several of those children later shaped British history. For instance, his sons George IV and William IV both became kings, while another son, Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathearn, fathered the future Queen Victoria

Reign and Achievements

George III began his reign in 1760 during a time of enormous change. Initially, he supported agricultural reform, scientific learning, and the arts. Furthermore, he took a keen interest in farming, which earned him the nickname “Farmer George”. However, his reign also witnessed the dramatic loss of the American colonies during the American War of Independence. Consequently, critics often blamed him for the defeat, even though Parliament directed most policy.

Legacy

Nevertheless, George III left a complicated but fascinating legacy. He ruled for sixty years, guiding Britain through wars, political upheaval, and industrial growth. Meanwhile, his later struggles with illness led to periods of regency, which added drama to an already turbulent reign. Ultimately, his descendants carried his line forward into the nineteenth century. Indeed, through Queen Victoria, his family shaped European royalty for generations.
