Tucked into the southwestern corner of the Netherlands, the province of Zeeland lives up to its name—it’s more sea than land. With a proud maritime tradition, Zeeland punched well above its weight in trade, shipbuilding, and coinage. Among its quirks? The charming 6 Stuivers coin, a silver sliver of Dutch ingenuity, worth half a gulden. Local markets buzzed with them; they clinked in pockets from Middelburg to Vlissingen.

Meanwhile, the 1790s brought turmoil. Revolutionary France spilled its ideas (and armies) across Europe, and the Dutch weren’t spared. The Batavian Republic replaced the old Dutch Republic in 1795, turning things democratic—at least on paper. Zeeland, ever salty and stubborn, adjusted with a raised eyebrow.

Though the Stuiver soon vanished in the currency reshuffle, it remains a tiny echo of a wild decade when coins changed hands—and governments—faster than the tide.
