During the eighteenth century, Prussia surged through Europe with astonishing energy. Consequently, neighbours eyed this upstart kingdom with equal parts suspicion and admiration. Moreover, Prussian administrators pushed efficiency to almost comic extremes; they counted everything—from trees to tax receipts—and they insisted on punctuality with near-religious zeal.

Frederick II (1740–86)

The Philosopher-King with a Sharp Sword

When Frederick II took the throne in 1740, he immediately accelerated Prussia’s transformation. Although he adored French philosophy, he also adored winning wars, so he balanced Voltaire’s letters with battlefield manoeuvres. Therefore, he launched daring campaigns, especially in Silesia, and these victories expanded Prussia’s territory as well as its confidence. Furthermore, he drilled his army with such ruthless precision that European generals quietly copied him while pretending not to.

Governance, Culture, and a Dash of Ego

Frederick ruled with tireless determination. Thus, he rewrote laws, encouraged religious tolerance, and invited intellectuals to join his sparkling court. At the same time, he composed music, inspected farms, and corrected officials with a nib of sarcasm. Eventually, his mixture of intellect and authority shaped Prussia into a state that looked both militarised and surprisingly enlightened.

Frederick left Prussia larger, richer, and confidently striding toward future power. In the end, his reign proved that a king could quote philosophy, command armies, and still find time to irritate half of Europe—all before breakfast.
