Because many Serbs shared the Orthodox Christian faith with Russia, they often looked towards St Petersburg rather than Vienna for support and inspiration. Birth and Family Background

Catherine II, later known as Catherine the Great, was born on 2 May 1729 in Stettin, Prussia, now Szczecin in Poland. She was born Sophie Friederike Auguste von Anhalt-Zerbst into the German noble house of Anhalt-Zerbst. Furthermore, her father, Christian August of Anhalt-Zerbst, served as a Prussian general, while her mother, Princess Johanna Elisabeth of Holstein-Gottorp, connected Catherine to several European royal families.

Achievements and Legacy

After arriving in Russia, Catherine transformed herself from a German princess into one of Russia’s most formidable rulers. She expanded Russian territory, encouraged education and promoted Enlightenment ideas. Meanwhile, she strengthened Russia’s position in the Balkans and increased its influence over Serbia.

Ultimately, Catherine left behind an empire that stood taller, richer and considerably louder on the European stage.
