Commodus: Rome’s Golden Boy Turned Mad Monarch

Early Life and Imperial Origins

Born on 31 August 161 AD in Lanuvium, just outside Rome, Lucius Aurelius Commodus came into the world wrapped in privilege. His father? None other than Marcus Aurelius, the revered Stoic emperor. His mother, Faustina the Younger, was a member of the esteemed Antonine dynasty. With imperial blood in his veins and an empire at his feet, Commodus was destined for greatness, or so it seemed.

Co-Ruler Before the Crown

At the tender age of 15, Commodus was made co-emperor by his father in 177 AD. This move, although strategic, raised eyebrows. While Marcus Aurelius had spent his reign on battlefields and in deep philosophy, Commodus showed more interest in bathing in luxury than in leading legions. Nevertheless, he stood beside his father during military campaigns in the Danube.

In 180 AD, Marcus Aurelius died; rumour has it, not entirely by natural causes and Commodus became the sole emperor. He was only 18, full of youthful vigour and grand ambitions, but also dangerously narcissistic.

Rule of the Unruly

Unlike his stoic father, Commodus fancied himself a living god, even styling himself as Hercules reborn. He dressed in lion skins, carried a club, and wrestled in the Colosseum, though not always fairly. Unsurprisingly, the Roman elite found his antics embarrassing. However, the masses adored his games and spectacles.

Transitioning from emperor to entertainer, Commodus spent lavishly, renamed Rome “Colonia Commodiana”, and even rechristened the months of the year after his own titles. Predictably, this didn’t go down well with the Senate.

Downfall and Dubious Legacy

Eventually, enough was enough. In 192 AD, after surviving countless plots, Commodus was strangled in his bath by a wrestler named Narcissus-yes, the irony is delightful.

In hindsight, Commodus left behind a crumbling empire and a sour taste. Yet, he’s oddly unforgettable. His life inspired Hollywood’s Gladiator, and historians still debate whether he was mad, bad, or merely misunderstood.

Conclusion

Commodus didn’t rule like a philosopher, nor did he build like an architect. Instead, he strutted, staged, and swung a wooden sword into infamy. He may not have stabilised the empire, but he certainly made it interesting.
