Maria Theresa entered the world on 13 May 1717 in Vienna, the heart of the Habsburg Empire. As the daughter of Emperor Charles VI and Elisabeth Christine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, she was never supposed to rule. After all, the Habsburg Empire traditionally preferred moustaches on monarchs. Nevertheless, with no male heirs in sight, Charles VI issued the Pragmatic Sanction, insisting that his beloved daughter should inherit everything—even if Europe disagreed.

Queen, Mother, and One-Woman Cabinet

Upon her father’s death in 1740, Maria Theresa faced scepticism, war, and just about every European monarch testing her resolve. But she didn’t blink. At just 23, with no formal training and a precarious throne, she claimed the crowns of Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, and the Austrian Netherlands—yes, all at once.

Despite immediate invasions and constant pressure, she retained most of her empire through grit, diplomacy, and a knack for survival. The War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748) nearly cost her everything, but Maria Theresa outlasted her enemies, solidified her rule, and made them think twice about underestimating a Habsburg woman.

Reformer with a Regal Touch

Maria Theresa was more than just a queen in a crisis. Over the years, she reformed tax systems, curbed noble privileges, modernised the military, and even introduced mandatory education. As if running half of Europe wasn’t enough, she gave birth to 16 children—including the infamous Marie Antoinette, later queen of France.

Moreover, she centralised authority, professionalised bureaucracy, and brought the sprawling Habsburg domains under tighter control. Even the remote Austrian Netherlands (modern-day Belgium) felt her influence.

The End of an Era, Not Her Legacy

After ruling for 40 years, Maria Theresa died in 1780, but her legacy lived on. She didn’t just preserve an empire; she reshaped it. Though often overshadowed by flashier monarchs, she remains a towering figure of intellect, resilience, and wit in corsets.
