Gros de Nesle
The “Gros de Nesle” coin derived its name from the workshop’s location in the Hôtel de Nesle, established by the king and now the site of the Paris Mint. Marc Béchot, a general tailor, handled the engraving, while Jacques Pinatel oversaw its production. However, Pinatel’s deceptive methods led to the coin earning the infamous moniker “pinatelles” in the South of France during the reigns of Charles IX and Henri III. Criticism arose due to the coins’ foreign origin, as outlined in the ordinance of January 31, 1549.
