Peter I of Cyprus: The Crusading King
Born to Rule
Peter I was born in 1328 in Nicosia, Cyprus, the bold second son of King Hugh IV and Queen Alix of Ibelin. As a Lusignan prince, ambition ran deep in his veins.
Crown and Conflict
When his father abdicated in 1359, Peter seized the crown with gusto. Unlike most medieval monarchs, he didn’t just sit on a throne, he sharpened his sword. He dreamed of reviving the Crusades, not with sermons, but with steel.
The Last Crusader
In 1365, Peter led a daring raid on Alexandria. His knights looted the city, then left before the Mamluks could strike back. Though he failed to hold Egypt, he made waves across Europe, earning respect and enemies.
Fall of a Fighter
Jealous nobles eventually turned against him. In 1369, Peter was murdered, ironically by his own men. For all his boldness, he couldn’t outfight court intrigue.
