Crusaders and the Knights Templar

The Crusades, launched in the late 11th century, were part pilgrimage, part military campaign, and part medieval chaos. While many took up the cross for religious reasons, others clearly had an eye on land, gold, or a reputation forged in battle. Among the many military orders that emerged from this swirl of holy ambition, none became more iconic — or controversial — than the Knights Templar.

Founded in the early 12th century, the Templars began as humble protectors of pilgrims in the Holy Land. However, they didn’t stay humble for long. As the Crusades unfolded, they transformed into an elite warrior-monastic order, wielding both military power and immense financial influence. Indeed, they ran what was arguably the medieval world’s most sophisticated banking system. Not bad for a group of monks in chainmail.

The Fall of the Templars

Despite their battlefield prowess, the Templars made enemies in high places. By the early 14th century, King Philip IV of France — heavily in debt to the order — moved against them. With the reluctant blessing of Pope Clement V, he accused the Templars of heresy, tortured confessions out of them, and seized their wealth. The order was officially dissolved in 1312, though their legend has only grown stronger with time.

Peter I of Cyprus: The Last Crusader King

While most of Europe had turned inward by the mid-14th century, Peter I of Cyprus refused to let the crusading spirit die quietly. Taking the throne in 1359, Peter didn’t just dream of holy war — he actively pursued it. Bold, impulsive, and occasionally reckless, he toured Europe to rally support for a new crusade, charming nobles and browbeating kings along the way.

Eventually, in 1365, he led a daring — if short-lived — campaign against Alexandria in Egypt. The city fell to his forces, but instead of holding it, Peter’s troops looted and departed. Even so, he became a minor legend, hailed as the last European king to conquer a major Muslim city. Not bad for a man who preferred action to administration.

Legacy in Steel and Sand

Although Peter’s crusading dreams ultimately failed, he proved that the fire of holy war hadn’t entirely gone out. While the Knights Templar had vanished decades earlier, Peter carried the same banner — sword raised, crown slightly askew, and idealism clashing headlong with reality.
